If you're thinking about college, these tips from the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority may help you receive more money to pay for your education.
- Complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible
- You can file online at www.fafsa.gov
- Look for local scholarships at your high school or in the local news
- Talk with your school counselor
- Talk with a financial aid officer at the school you plan to attend
- Reduce your student loan costs - only take out loans after you have received all the free aid for which you qualify (grants, scholarships and work-study programs)
- If you have to take out a loan, federal loans are generally better deals than private loans, but compare interest rates and repayment terms carefully
- Visit Web sites with free information about financial aid, careers and college opportunities
- Think "neat and complete" when you fill out applications
- Make sure you meet all deadlines
